Margin

Privacy Policy

Margin is a menu-bar Markdown notes app for Mac, made by Advent Innovation. This policy describes what the app does with your information. The short version: Margin does not collect any, and your notes are your own files in your own folder.

Effective date: September 18, 2026

What Margin collects

Nothing. Margin has no account, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising, and no crash reporting service. It makes no network requests of its own and has no server to send anything to.

Your notes

Your notes are plain Markdown files in a folder you choose, and they stay there. Margin reads and writes those files in place, so the folder is the record: you can open it in Finder, back it up, sync it, or stop using Margin entirely and your notes are still ordinary .md files.

Margin can reach only the folder you picked. macOS grants that access when you choose the folder, and the app keeps a bookmark so it can reopen the same folder the next time you launch it. It has no access to the rest of your disk.

What stays on your Mac

Your chosen vault folder and its bookmark, your keyboard shortcuts, and your window preferences. These live in the app's own sandbox container on your Mac.

Margin reads the modification date of each note so the list can be sorted and can show when a note last changed. That date comes from the file itself and is never sent anywhere.

Sharing

The share button hands the note's file to the standard macOS share sheet, and whatever you choose from that sheet, such as Mail or Messages or AirDrop, takes it from there under its own privacy policy. Margin never uploads a note on its own.

Children

Margin is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
